Kate Hudson transitions from rom-com into villainy: A sneak peek into her role in ‘Shell’

Did you know Kate Hudson is not just the romcom queen of our youth, but also a singer and published author? With singer Bill Hudson and actress Goldie Hawn as parents, it’s no surprise Kate Hudson is a talent powerhouse!

But what caught my attention is the way she has started to dive headfirst into serious roles, not just the chick flicks we watched growing up. For example, the neo-noir crime drama film The Killer Inside Me or the political thriller The Reluctant Fundamentalist and now with the body horror film Shell, directed by Max Minghella.

Kate Hudson made her cinematic debut in the 1998 drama Desert Blue, quickly following up with supporting roles in various films. But it was her iconic turn as Penny Lane in Cameron Crowe’s Almost Famous (2000) that catapulted her to stardom. The performance earned her a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress and an Oscar nomination in the same category.

Throughout the 2000s, Hudson became the go-to leading lady for romantic comedies, starring in hits like How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003), You, Me and Dupree (2006), Fool’s Gold (2008), and Bride Wars (2009). She also made her mark on TV with a memorable recurring role in Glee (2012–2013) and more recently, starring in the thriller Truth Be Told (2022) and the upcoming comedy series Running Point.

Her impressive filmography also includes The Skeleton Key (2005), Nine (2009), Rock the Kasbah (2015), Deepwater Horizon (2016), Mother’s Day (2016), Music (2021), and Daniel Craig-led-Glass Onion (2022).

In her latest role in the dark comedy and body horror film Shell, Kate plays the enigmatic CEO of the Shell company, Zoe Shannon. Shell explores society’s obsession with youth and beauty as Samantha (Elisabeth Moss), an up-and-coming actress, confronts the CEO of the Shell beauty empire, challenging the company’s controversial science. Zoe offers to mentor Samantha, helping her rise to stardom. But as Samantha’s career takes off, she becomes increasingly suspicious of her missing friend Chloe (Kaia Gerber), the strange symptoms Chloe’s been displaying, and the mysterious happenings in Shell’s laboratories.

It poses a question relevant in today’s AI dominated world: Would you gamble your health and future on a few days of mysterious treatments promising eternal youth and longevity? Would you trust cutting-edge science that could be more flash than fact?

When asked about how she navigated playing this ruthless character, Kate shared:

“She’s definitely a bit of a sociopath. So, like anything else, like any other role, you really delve into who she is and what makes her the way she is and make the choices that she makes. I worked closely with the Max (the director) to come up with an understanding of his tone and vision for the film. I feel like it really turned out fun and good. I know he’s happy, so that makes me happy.”

Stay tuned for Shell, it is speculated to release worldwide in the latter half of next year!
